What is a Fagforening? Danish Trade Unions vs A-kasse
Kort svar
A fagforening is a trade union: it negotiates collective agreements, checks your contract and represents you in disputes with your employer. An a-kasse only insures your income. They are separate products with separate fees, and you can buy either one alone.

The Danish model in one paragraph
Denmark has no statutory minimum wage. Pay, working hours, overtime, notice periods and pension contributions are set in collective agreements (overenskomster) negotiated between unions and employer associations. That is why unions matter here more than in countries where parliament writes the rules — the agreements themselves are the labour law.
What you actually get
Union membership is service, not insurance.
- Someone reads your employment contract before you sign it
- Legal representation if you are dismissed, harassed or not paid
- Salary statistics for your role, which is powerful in Danish salary talks
- A workplace representative (tillidsrepræsentant) who negotiates on your behalf
- Often: courses, networks and career counselling
Do internationals need one?
Arguably more than Danes do. If you cannot read a contract in Danish, do not know what a normal salary looks like in your field, and have no local network to ask, a union is the cheapest professional advice available. If your workplace has no collective agreement, everything in your contract is individually negotiated — and you are negotiating alone.
That said, it is optional. Plenty of internationals hold only an a-kasse and are perfectly protected on the income side.
Buying them separately
Many funds sell a-kasse membership without any union attached — A&Til, Akademikernes, CA, Min A-kasse and ASE among them. Others quote a combined price where the union is the larger part of the bill. Always check what the number includes: with funds like HK the union fee alone can rival the a-kasse fee, so ask the fund for the current amount.
Det spørger andre om
- Do I have to join a union in Denmark?
- No. Union membership is voluntary and closed-shop agreements are illegal. Your employer cannot require it.
- Can I have an a-kasse without a fagforening?
- Yes, and it is common. Several funds sell a-kasse membership on its own.
- Is union membership tax deductible?
- Yes, up to an annual ceiling set by law, alongside your a-kasse deduction.
- What is a tillidsrepræsentant?
- An elected colleague who represents staff towards management under the collective agreement. They are your first contact in a workplace conflict.
